The rules are different for home versus business and government e-waste.Business and governmental e-waste is banned from disposal on Oahu. Home electronics are exempted from the ban and can be disposed of with regular household refuse or bulky collection, but you are encouraged to consider the reuse and recycling options presented below. Locally, the Hawaii Electronic Waste and Television Recycling and Recovery Law was adopted by the Hawaii State Legislature in 2008. It requires electronics manufacturers to provide recycling programs for computers, computer monitors and televisions. The State Department of Health is responsible for implementing this new law.

On Oahu, e-waste was banned from disposal as of July 2006. Household and small quantity generators are exempt in accordance with EPA guidelines.

Local businesses or commercial entities, which generate e-waste should contact the State Department of Health - Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch for more information, or refer to an e-waste recycler (eCycler) listed below.

All types of generators -- commercial, government, household -- are encouraged to investigate reuse options offered by local non-profits and trade-in programs offered by manufacturers.

Donate

Donate computer equipment to local schools and organizations. Newer, working equipment is preferred, however older or non-working equipment may also be accepted.

Hawaiian Hope
Hawaiian Hope is a 100% volunteer organization and certified non profit that refurbishes computer equipment and donates them to children and families in need. They accept used computer equipment or cash donation to help them serve their community. Donations are tax deductible.

Hawaii Computers for Kids
The Hawaii Computers for Kids Program has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu since 1992. Over 350 PK-12 schools throughout the state repurpose donated personal computers for use in classrooms and training facilities. The program currently accepts Core i-series and later Windows computers, Intel-based Macs, networking equipment, working printers connecting with a USB and one working LED monitor with each acceptable computer; other items may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Donation receipts are offered.

National Cristina Foundation
National Cristina Foundation gives computer equipment and software a second productive life by placing these technology resources with charities, schools, and public agencies, to provide training to students at risk, the economically disadvantaged, and people with disabilities. Donated equipment is generally removed by a partner organization. Donors can also drop off equipment at a designated location or ship it to the partner organization.

Goodwill Hawaii
Goodwill donation locations will accept household electronics such as VCR and DVD players, desktop and laptop computers, keyboards, printers, scanners, monitors, computer accessories like cords and mice, landline and cell phones, gaming consoles and games. Drop-Off Options and Local E-Waste Recyclers

Old electronics can be recycled for their plastic, metal and chemical components. Disposal fees may apply. The recyclers listed below can provide, at your request, complete details regarding the disposition of your equipment to off-island e-waste processors. Batteries

Give your old auto batteries to the dealer when purchasing new ones, as State law requires the dealer to accept and recycle them. Householders may also take auto batteries to any City Convenience Center or Transfer Station, Interstate Batteries, Batteries + Bulbs, Battery Bill's or one of the Aloha Aina and Going Green events.

Drop off rechargeable (non-lead acid) stand-alone batteries (from cell phones, laptop computers, and power tools etc.) at Best Buy or Batteries + Bulbs. Home Depot accepts rechargeable batteries from power tools.

To recycle entire devices with the battery still inside (like laptops, cell phones, etc.), drop off at Aloha Overstock, T&N Computer Recycling, Batteries + Bulbs or Best Buy.

Regular alkaline (non-rechargeable) batteries can be safely disposed of with your regular refuse collection.Manufacturers no longer use heavy metals in their production.

Founded in February 2001, the mission of Computer Recycling of Virginia, Inc. (CRVA) is to place educationally-useful equipment into Virginia's schools and non-profit organizations free of charge, while promoting electronics recycling throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

We accept all computer related equipment and most any electronic device. Computers, laptops, networking, and telephone equipment, even cables and mice are a few of the items that we process daily. All acquired components are reused or recycled in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local regulations. None of the equipment we process is sent to the landfill!

Reuse, refurbishment, and recycling has enabled CRVA to donate over 20,000 pieces of equipment to Virginia Schools, non-profits, and youth programs. Over 14,000 tons of e-Waste has been diverted from Virginia's landfills helping our children, and protecting the environment

In 2008 and 2009 CRVA donated 4200 pieces of electronic equipment to schools, non-profits, and local government organizations. CRVA's ability to continue to donate this much-needed equipment is directly related to the donations of equipment that CRVA receives from businesses and individuals for recycling. Give your old obsolete electronic equipment new life and purpose by donating it to CRVA to help us continue donating much-needed equipment to Virginia's public schools and non-profit organizations.
