The British Rail Class 701 is a class of electric multiple unit being built for South Western Railway (SWR) at Derby Litchurch Lane Works. They are due to enter service in March 2021 on the Reading, Windsor and South West London suburban lines.[2][3]

Built on the Bombardier Aventra platform, SWR will brand them as Arterios.[4]

History[edit]

Avantra is the industry-leading AIOps platform for SAP Operations: helping companies transform into a self-healing enterprise. Alan Fravolini, Bombardier portfolio director for Aventra projects, said: “The first set begins testing in the autumn, and the end of the programme is summer 2020.” For the FULL story on Greater Anglia's new trains, read RAIL 862, published on September 26, and available digitally on Android, iPad and Kindle on September 22. In March 2017, SWR was awarded the South Western franchise with a commitment to introduce 750 new carriages.[5][6][7] In June 2017, SWR awarded a contract to Bombardier Transportation for 90 Aventra DC EMUs, with 60 ten-car and 30 five-car trains to be introduced from 2019 at a cost of £895m.[8][9] There is an option to purchase a further five ten-car units if required by October 2020.[10] The units will be maintained at Wimbledon depot and the future Feltham depot which will open in 2021.

This first train should return to the United Kingdom in October 2020 for further testing, driver training, and eventual introduction into revenue service, initially along Birmingham’s Cross-City lines in the west-Midlands. The key features of MyEID card are RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography, symmetric encryption with AES and 3DES, advanced file system and command interface. Drivers for MyEID can be downloaded on Aventra’s website. A User’s Guide is available on request. MyEID contains PIV emulation.

These new trains will eventually replace all of SWR's suburban fleet, which comprises classes 455, 456, 458 and 707.[11][8]

Initially classified as Class 705 (5-car) and Class 711 (10-car), the units were subsequently given the number Class 701 with 701/0 for the 10-car sets and 701/5 for the 5 car sets.[1]

After a brief production halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic,[12] the first unit was delivered to SWR's Eastleigh depot on 10 June 2020,[13] with test runs first taking place in August 2020. As of October 2020, eight sets have been delivered.[14]

Features[edit]

The Class 701 will feature regenerative braking, wide gangways between coaches, wide doors for ease and efficiency of boarding and alighting, 2+2 standard class seating arrangement, Wi-Fi and at-seat USB charging points, as well as real-time passenger information screens, air conditioning, cycle racks and accessible toilets for disabled passengers. SWR will also provide a complimentary entertainment service called SWR|Stream which will be available when connected to the onboard WiFi.[8]

Each five-car train will have 274 seats with room for 361 standing passengers, while a 10-car set will seat 556 passengers with space for 746 standing.[15]

SWR have called the 701s 'a near £1 billion investment,' and they have said that 'these modern trains are designed and operated to reduce station dwell times, so more customers can arrive at their destinations on time more comfortably'.[2] They want to use the trains to increase peak capacity on suburban routes into London Waterloo by 46%.[15]

They mentioned that 'there will be several multi-use spaces available, where seating can be tipped up to accommodate prams or luggage. Dedicated wheelchair spaces are available as well as cycle racks so passengers can safely and conveniently store their bicycles' as well as showing off preview images of the new trains.[16]

The trains will also feature external door camera and monitors within the cab to enable them for Driver Controlled Operation.[17]

The first Class 701, 10 car unit 701002, was delivered from Derby Litchurch Lane Works to Eastleigh Works on 10 June 2020, for testing, in order to progress to certification from the Office of Rail & Road before passenger introduction later in the year. As of September 2020, seven ten car units have been moved to SWR facilities in Eastleigh and Wimbledon for initial testing.[18]

The first new Bombardier Aventra train, which is due to transform Greater Anglia suburban services over the next few years, has arrived in the region for testing.

The trains are being built at Derby and the first was due to arrive in East Anglia early last year, but there have been problems with getting identical trains to work properly on London rail services.

However the first has now arrived for testing by engineers at Greater Anglia's Ilford depot in east London. It has not yet been cleared to start testing on the tracks in the region and it could be several months before the first passengers are carried on its services.

The Aventra trains are due to take over all electric suburban services in the region. They will form the trains from Liverpool Street to Colchester, Clacton, Harwich and Braintree. Some will also reach Ipswich on suburban trains.

In the west of the region, they will take over services between Liverpool Street and Cambridge.

The five-carriage electric train, designed and built at Bombardier's Derby factory, was delivered on Tuesday 14 January.

A group of Greater Anglia train drivers have been for test drives on the new Bombardier electric trains at Network Rail's national test facility in Leicestershire.

Seven drivers have taken one of the new trains for a spin, checking out all of the features in the hi-tech driver's cab, so that they can start testing them on the Greater Anglia network.

Bombardier has now built around a third of the carriages which will make up 111 new electric trains.

The new trains are all longer, with more seats, plug and USB sockets, air conditioning, better passenger information screens and improved accessibility features.

Ian McConnell, Greater Anglia franchise and programme director, said: 'It's fantastic to have one of these new Bombardier trains now on our patch.

'Our test drivers have been very impressed with them. They said it was like going from a bottom of the range small car to a Rolls Royce compared to driving our old trains.

'We're confident our customers will be equally pleased with the quality of the new trains, as they should greatly improve their journeys with us.

Driver

'The drivers will now spend many hours in the cab of the new trains as we test how the trains interact with the overhead wires, signals and points, their performance at different speeds, double-checking them at platforms in stations across the network to make sure new signage is in the right place.'

The Bombardier electric trains are expected to enter passenger service this spring and should all be in service by spring 2021.

Will Tanner, from Bombardier, said: 'These British-designed and built trains have been delayed by a range of factors, but production is now being ramped up with extra staff recruited at our Derby factory so that Greater Anglia's customers can benefit from these state-of-the-art trains as quickly as possible.'
