This spring, AVC will offer English 115: Introduction to Technical Communication. This class is specifically designed for students in the upcoming bachelor’s program. This advanced composition course prepares students to write in technical and professional fields. (Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 101 or ENGL 101SL) English 115 is a requirement for enrollment in the upcoming Bachelor’s degree. The course will be offered in spring 2016 and possibly not again until fall 2016. Lancaster, Calif. – Faculty of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division, the AVC Sociology Club, and the Associated Student Organization (ASO) will host a presentation by Dr. Michael Shermer on Friday, October 2, 2015, in the AVC Performing Arts Theatre, from 10 a.m. to noon. Shermer will discuss the importance of science and rationality in the course of civilization’s long march toward greater individual freedom and ethical relations with others. This event is free and open to the public. Dr. Michael B. Shermer is an acclaimed science writer and recipient of the Philip J. Klass Award for outstanding contributions in promoting critical thinking and scientific understanding (2006). Antelope Valley College will host a joint regional emergency response exercise on Wednesday, October 14. The emergency simulation will start at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude no later than noon. Students, faculty, staff and members of the public should not be alarmed by any unusual concentration of emergency vehicles, personnel, smoke or additional noise at or around AVC on the morning of October 14. Entrance and exits to parking lots 2 and 3 may be intermittently affected. This is a live field exercise designed to test the Antelope Valley College emergency plan and will involve a simulated transportation accident with volunteer “casualties”, and responses from various emergency services agencies including Los Angeles County Fire Department, Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, and American Medical Response. Over 120 campers between the ages of 5-17 attended the Dewayne Dedmon Youth Basketball Camp this past Saturday, August 15. Mike Rios, Athletic Counselor and Assistant Men's Basketball Coach, served as camp director. All campers received a basketball, t-shirt, a pair of basketball shoes, and sweats at no cost.
